Massage for Palliative Care

The Mayo clinic defines palliative care as ‘specialized medical care that focuses on providing patients relief from pain and other symptoms of a serious illness, no matter the diagnosis or stage of disease’. Research is proving the efficacy of massage therapy in relieving many of the symptoms associated with disease, pain in particular.

This class equips the practitioner with a knowledge of common diseases/conditions, their associated symptoms, and how best to offer palliative care with massage therapy. You will learn protocols for working in clinical settings such as hospitals, and in private practice. The class will emphasize the ethics of working with clients living with a disease as well as issues that might arise in relationships with staff at health care facilities. Precautions to be used around medical devices such as catheters, IVs and pain patches are covered in detail. You will learn self-care practices to help you maintain a healthy balance when working with the ill and compromised.

More are coming to us for relief from the symptoms of medical conditions. This class will provide you the knowledge and ability to properly treat many of these conditions. Also, the Joint Commission, which accredits health care organizations, has recently required non-pharmacological treatment be made available for pain control and massage therapy is one of the accepted complementary strategies. As allopathic medicine seeks to find practitioners trained in palliative care, having these skills can be an added marketing tool for your private practice.
